South Korea on Friday reported three more death cases related to the A/H1N1 flu virus, raising the country's death toll from the new contagious disease to 48.
According to the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs, a two-year-old boy, a 29-year-old woman and a 54-year-oldwomen died recently after having been infected with the A/H1N1 virus.
The two-year-old boy who lived in Chung Cheong Province, died on Tuesday after being treated with antiviral drug Tamiflu on Monday, the ministry said, adding that it was not clear when he first began showing symptoms of the new flu and the route of infection.
The 29-year-old woman, a resident of Jeolla Province, began showing flu symptoms on Oct. 31, and died on Nov. 2 just after being diagnosed with the new flu and was not treated with antiviral drug, the ministry said.
It also said the 54-year-old woman who also lived in Chung Cheong Province, began showing flu-like symptoms on Oct. 28, and died on Oct. 31 despite taking Tamiflu.
The all three victims are all categorized as "high-risk" patients, the ministry said.
The ministry noted that the death toll may rise as the health authorities are still carrying out further medical tests on 10 other suspected death cases of the new flu.
The country on Tuesday revised up its alert level against the A/H1N1 flu from the second-highest "orange" to the highest "red," calling on its people to pay closer attention.
