The number of H1N1 cases has been slowly increasing throughout Manitoba, including right here in the central region.
That from CRHA's Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Shelley Buchan, who says while the current activity isn't quite to the degree they saw back in May and June, physicians are seeing an increased number of people complaining of flu-like symptoms.
Buchan notes folks need to keep in mind that if they are sick they should take all necessary self-care measures, and if they fall into a high risk group they need to see their physicians early in the course of the illness.
She adds the vast majority of people will be able to manage on their own but pregnant women, children under the age of five and those with severe chronic medical conditions should be assessed to determine whether Tamiflu would make sense for them.
Buchan says common sense things like remembering to cover your cough, conducting good hand hygiene and staying home when you're sick will help reduce the amount of illness within your community.
She notes when the large H1N1 vaccination clinics begin, they will be doing a bit of screening at the door to ensure that healthy people stay healthy while at the clinic.
Buchan adds everyone should take the opportunity to get their flu shots as soon as the vaccine becomes widely available.
